Infinity HealthCare, Inc. (IHC) has found that hospitals' reimbursement procedures in the emergency department can be refined and enhanced to yield significant revenue improvement, often exceeding 20%. Net collections alone can yield increases from 3% to 15% through proper billing procedures and reimbursement analysis. Establishing appropriate fee schedules and proper coding are paramount.
Most hospitals have been increasingly committed to excellence in medical care in the emergency department, the largest door into the hospital. It is not atypical to see 40% to 50% of hospital admissions and inpatient days generated by emergency department visits. Furthermore, utilization of ancillary services is substantially enhanced as follows:
- Fifty percent (50%) of the patients visiting the emergency department will utilize pharmacy services
- Thirty-five percent (35%) will require x-rays
- Thirty percent (30%) will need laboratory tests
- Ten percent (10%) will have EKGs
- Three percent (3%) will undergo respiratory therapy
- Thirty percent (30%) will utilize central supply
The emergency department is becoming increasingly visible in the community both among patients and medical staff. Quality care and promotion of it has taken an even more important role than in the past. Of course, establishing and maintaining a high quality of care has its cost implications. These cost implications may be offset with the proper focus on billing/reimbursement issues.
Expertise
Infinity HealthCare, Inc. is a group of Board Certified/Eligible Emergency Physicians, residency trained in emergency medicine. Thus, unlike reimbursement generalists, since 1976 IHC has exclusively concentrated our efforts on emergency department reimbursement. IHC billing software was developed as a result of our frustration in trying to manage reimbursement with billing services that could not provide necessary and timely information. Utilizing state of the art information systems technology, IHC offers tremendous flexibility in providing management decision support and ad hoc reporting capabilities.
